A Breeder’s Prayer

Dedicated to Blue Boy…. May you play forever at the rainbow bridge

I love my little puppy; he makes my house a home.
He is my very sweetest little friend and I will never feel alone,

He makes me smile; he makes me laugh; he fills my heart with love.
I start to wonder did someone actually breed him or did he just fall from above?

I have never been a breeder, never seen life through their eyes;
I hold my little puppy and just sit and think about life and try not to criticize.

I’ve never known their anguish;  I’ve never felt their pain.
The caring of their charges; through snow or wind or rain.

I’ve never waited the whole night for puppies to be born.
Never felt the stress and trepidation when they’re still not there by morn.

I start to imagine what it was like to worry and wait until the whelping began.
The weight of responsibility now laid in the palms of their hands.
Four little puppies where successfully whelped by their Dam.
However one of the puppies only weighed 60 grams.

Formula, bottles, heating pads, they got to get this just right.
Every two-hours you are feeding him and praying he will be alright.
Within their heart they must dread that they may lose this fight.
Yet they still cling to hope that God willing . . . they just MIGHT.

Day one; he’s in there fighting; they say a silent prayer.
Day two & three, he’s doing well, with lots of love and care.
Day four & five . . . he’s still alive; their hopes soar to the heavens.
Day six he slips away again, and dies in their hands on day seven.

They take this little angel and bury him alone.
With aching heart and burning tears they go back home.

So you ask yourself, “Why do this? . . . Why suffer through this pain?”
Yet watch ther joy your puppies bring, and everything’s explained.

So, when you think of breeders and label them with “Greed,”
Think of all that they endure to fill another’s need.

For when you buy your puppy, with your precious dollars you will part.
You only pay with money . . . while they pay with all their heart.
